Attracting Institutional Assets: The Importance of Operational Due Diligence
For fund managers seeking to attract assets from institutional investors, it is critical to understand the areas of potential risk to their business operations. Prior to the 2008 financial crisis and its associated investment scandals, due diligence on fund operations was a lower priority. Today, the need to safeguard against operational risk is ongoing and requires constant oversight by the manager. Far beyond a simple check-the-box exercise, operational due diligence (ODD) has become an in-depth process in which investors assess both the fund’s internal risk levels and the risk profiles of outsourced service providers.

Second Annual CFANY GIPS Forum
The Global Investment Performance Standards (GIPS) are a set of standardized, industry-wide ethical principles that provide investment management firms with guidance on how to calculate and report investment performance to prospective clients. Investment managers voluntarily choose to abide by the GIPS standards – compliance is not mandated by any law or regulation. For many years, GIPS compliance has been seen as an essential ingredient that can make or break a firm’s marketing efforts in terms of winning new mandates and maintaining institutional clients. To this date, more than 1,200 firms have registered with the CFA Institute as claiming compliance with the GIPS Standards. This event will provide a forum in New York to discuss the most recent developments in the GIPS standards and share views on the challenges and opportunities of their implementation. The Forum will feature GIPS experts from the CFA Institute, GIPS committees, asset owners and asset management firms and will rely on the active participation of the attendees for an exchange of ideas and to identify solutions for current implementation questions.

This topic recently made headlines when the largest asset manager, Blackrock, announced replacing fundamental analysts and PMs with data scientists in its Scientific Active Equity group. But how has the investment management industry been impacted by better data availability and improved quantitative techniques? How can managers combine quantitative tools with fundamental analysis to be better prepared for an evolving market? Hear from experts on both sides including quantitative analysts and fundamental managers who have quant tools to get a practitioner’s perspective on the recent advances in quantitative investing and how the advanced use of data has merged with concepts of fundamental stock analysis to create better outcomes for investors.

Value Investing Group Meeting
The Value Investor Series harkens back to the founding of CFANY 80 years ago. It is the confluence of the worlds most prestigious investors, authors, academic experts and practitioners. Through seminars, the internet, social events and the annual Ben Graham Conference, this Series is re-establishing CFANY as the world's premier forum for investment thought leadership. In 2016, the Value Investor Series brought eight CFANY Author Series events, two social functions, four Financial Report and Analysis discussions, one hedge fund event and 10 Special Situation Ideas Forums to the CFANY community. The Annual Ben Graham Conference, created by vice-chair Elliot Trexler, brought together nearly 20 of the world's preeminent value investors as speakers—and managers of approximately $80Bn in assets under management—for a thoughtful discussion attended by nearly 200 CFANY members. The series is led by Michael Oliver Weinberg, CFA, CFANY's 2016 Volunteer of the Year, Most Outstanding Industry Committee and Asset Owner Series Award winner, as well as the Chair of the Value Investing thought leadership group. The Value Investing Group is co-run by three vice-chairs in Elliot Trexler whom spearheads the lecture series; Vishal Mishra, leading both the Special Situation Series and the forensic accounting series; and Andrew Kahn, head of the social series. Group Chair Michael Oliver Weinberg spearheads the acclaimed Annual Ben Graham Conference. The series also owes a tremendous thanks to the Board and staff of CFANY.
