Overview

CFA Society New York is hosting a discussion on the market’s potential interest in an extension of the Treasury bond market beyond the current maximum 30-year maturity, possibly to 50 or even 100 years. Other countries already issue longer-term government bonds, and this may be an attractive time for the U.S. government to do so with interest rates at historically low levels. Certain investors focused on liability duration-matched asset portfolios such as pension fund and life insurance investors could be especially interested in investing in these instruments. Program speakers include institutional investors from pension funds and insurers and government trading desks.

Questions to be addressed are:

  • Is there a demand or a longer Treasury bond? If so, how large is this demand?
  • Who are the market participants interested in these instruments?
  • How might they trade in the market?
  • What yield might these instruments offer?
  • How do long dated government bonds perform in other countries?
