Our panel of experts explores a new regulation known as “Markets in Financial Instruments Directive” (MiFID II) – a policy directive with far-reaching consequences for all financial services firms. The central theme of this regulation is increased transparency and safeguards for investors. It has direct implications for areas such as treatment of soft dollars, research and data access, break evens for small and emerging managers, and beyond. Currently only a European regulation, this is highly likely to at least impact firms operating in the US. Yet, the implications are still poorly understood by the investing world. We explore the positives and the negatives to this legislation and its effect on investment firms.

Learning Outcome Statements

  • What are the increased hard costs and why?
  • Who will be affected by the need to lower fees?
  • How burdensome are the new requirements going to be to banks and traders?
  • What will the unintended consequences be and who will feel them most?
