Emerging and Frontier Markets Series

Africa Rising: Investor Fad or Sustainable Trend?

Thursday, February 25, 2016

A debate on whether Africa is really poised to become a region that can deliver meaningful and sustainable growth. Do the impressive growth rates posted by various countries across Africa reflect real and sustainable economic progress, or just the windfalls of a commodity boom that is unwinding? How has investor excitement around Africa changed as the hunt for higher yields evolves as developed market rates normalize? ‎We have seen periodic spikes in investor interest in Africa that dissipated – why is this time any different? ‎We have seen an increase in capital flowing into Africa, but not much increase in the supply of investable assets (both private and public) – how is this demand-supply imbalance expected to unfold? Are investors over/under estimating risk factors in Africa, particularly relative to other frontier and emerging markets? Discuss political risks and evolving role of government in investment landscape – where have we seen the most & least progress?

This event will:

  • Give you a more in-depth look at the specific investment vehicles in Africa and the methods of analyzing and investing in them
  • Promote a more useful and detailed discourse than the standard Africa narrative
  • Address the global challenge of applying increasingly data-driven financial analysis techniques to markets with often unreliable statistical coverage
  • Provide members and other conference attendees with an opportunity to network with top professionals in the Africa-focused investment sphere
